Working From Home: Pros and Cons

When you first start working from home it is an amazing feeling because you get to sleep in and go at your own pace. You don’t have someone looking over your shoulder telling you what to do and when to do it, but that can also be the hardest part. You don’t have someone to hold you accountable for getting things done in a timely manner. Personally, I am the type of person that gets things done just out the knowledge that they need to get done. I am lucky in that aspect, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get hard even for me. I thought I would share some of the pros and cons of working from home to share with you guys what I struggle with and what most people struggle with. I thought I would also share some way to help with the cons in order to combat the hard things we struggle with.

PROS

1. Pick Your Schedule

The one thing I love about working from home is that I can pick my schedule. I get to pick when I work, what I work on, and when I want to take a break. I like to workout in the morning, but I also like to sleep in. I can sleep in go to the gym and then start working when I am done with my morning routine. I also have responsibilities outside of this at home side hustle; I have a part-time job. Being able to schedule my work at home schedule around that is very important. I love spending time with my niece as well so sometimes I will decide to take a couple hours off and go spend some time with her since she loves her auntie! You don’t have to work every second of every day so it’s nice to be able to pick and choose when you want to go for lunch or quit for the day.

2. You Are Your Own Boss

You get to be the boss. You don’t have to listen to what anyone else tells you to do and how to do it. This can also be a downfall, but I think this is the thing people love the most about working from home. You get to decide what new things you want to incorporate into your business and what direction you want to go next within your business. You get to be creative and come up with new photo setups, s new logo design, how to lay the items for your photos, etc but also get to work in the business side with the accounting, inventorying, etc. Some people like one side other the other, but personally I think both sides are so much fun and I would love doing them both over working for someone else.

3. No Dress Code

If you want to roll out bed and start working in your pajamas you totally can. You don’t have to get all dresses up and wear a blazer, you can wear comfy clothes. Honestly, I wear my pajamas every single day when working because I love to be comfortable when I am working. This is my absolute favorite part about working from home. I don’t have to get ready and make myself look good. I can just wear my pajamas and throw my hair up and I am ready to go.

4. Work From Anywhere

You don’t have to work at your house if you don’t want to. You can go to a coffee shop, your local smoothie place, or even sit poolside (if it’s actually nice enough outside). I am moving in a couple months to an apartment complex that will have a rooftop pool and I am so excited about all the work I will be able to get done whilst sitting poolside. I am so excited to enjoy the warmth of the sun while working. It is amazing that we have jobs that allow us to work basically from wherever we decide.

CONS

1. No Boss

I know I mentioned this as a pro just a couple paragraphs ago, but this can also be considered a con. You don’t have anyone telling you what to do which can cause someone people to not get anything done. As I said earlier I am the type of person that does things on my own knowing they just need to be done, but not everyone is like me. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses before getting into this business will help you overcome what you need to work on when you start working from home. By knowing that you need to be told what to do in order to actually do it you begin to learn how to overcome that weakness. For instance, you could start writing a to-do list for the day of everything you need to do. Pretend that your “boss” gave it to you when you got to work this morning and begin doing each task.

2. Easily Distracted

This happens to me ALL THE TIME. My job is on my phone, but I get distracted by other things on my phone. I am trying to take photos, but I keep getting group text notifications about something that’s going on later tonight that I don’t want to miss so I start replying and all of a sudden its an hour later and I got sucked into a wormhole. Well if you were a “real job” would you be answering those texts? Most likely not. So why is it so hard to do at your stay at home job? You need to realize that this is your job and in order to make money, you need to actually put work and effort into it. Give yourself small tasks to do and when you complete those tasks you can take a small Instagram break. I say to myself all the time “when I finish steaming and photographing this stack of items I can look on Instagram” or “when I inventory these items I can take a break and watch a YouTube video”. You don’t need to work every single second of every single hour of the entire day. That’s just crazy. So let yourself have little breaks, but know that you can’t take a break for the entire day.

3. Picking Your Schedule

I also had this in the pro category, but it can also count as a con. I sometimes get calls around lunchtime from people asking to get lunch and I usually say yes and then I am out for the day and end up running errands and then next thing I know its 6PM and I didn’t get any work done for the day. While this is totally fine to do every once and while you need to know when to say no or plan in advance. You need to get stuff done during the day and while you can move things around an be flexible with your schedule, time is money. More time you spend actually working the money you are going to make. You can still sell items while out and about, but if you just decide to stop working for a few days that will end up showing eventually when you haven’t listed anything for a few days.

Know yourself and your habits. This is the best piece of advice I could give to anyone. In order to know how you can improve you need to know what you’re doing wrong and why. This is the best job ever so make sure you are enjoying every second! I hope you guys liked this post. Let me know any pros or cons you have encountered while in this business!

XOXO, Cait
